Engineering Career Center

The Engineering Career Center (ECC) provides resources to help UIC Engineering students secure internships, co-ops, and jobs.

Your Future in Science

This monthly seminar series is a cross-college program supported by GEMS and UIC Medicine. It is run by Dr. Philip Clifford, PhD, the associate dean for research at UIC’s College of Applied Health Sciences. He is an advocate for career and professional development for PhD scientists, and he is coauthor of the widely acclaimed career website myIDP.sciencecareers.org and an accompanying series of career planning articles in ScienceCareers. The Your Future in Science seminar series meets on the third Thursday of each month to present a variety of career-development topics.  To see topics and guests for past and future events in this series, follow this link.

Individual Development Plan (IDP)

The Individual Development Plan is a formal list of goals for research, professional skill development, and career planning. It is written and developed by the student, providing a framework and timeline to discuss progress with mentor(s). All graduate students in the biomedical engineering department are expect to develop an IDP after their second year and review it with their advisor each year. The myIDP website is a key resource for this process.

Versatile PhD

“The Versatile PhD” is an online resource for graduate students and postdocs who may be interested in non-academic careers. Founded and led by Paula Chambers, this online resource provides information for PhD students and postdocs in the humanities, social sciences, and STEM disciplines. Access this resource through the UIC Graduate College at this site.
