Students learn new developments in biomedical research at 12th annual IBTN Symposium

Those who attended the annual IBTN Symposium

The 12th annual Institute of Biomaterials, Tribocorrosion, Nano and Regenerative Medicine (IBTN) Research Symposium was held this spring at the UIC College of Dentistry.

The event, which was supported by the UIC Richard and Loan Hill Department of Biomedical Engineering, focused on “What’s New and Exciting in Biomedical Research” and highlighted recent developments, including biomaterials for implants, microfluidic organ models, bioimaging, and AI for biomedical applications.

The symposium brought together students and researchers from across the country and included lectures, panel discussions, poster presentations, and industry talks. The keynote speech given by Joshua Jacobs of Rush University Medical Center Department of Orthopedics focused on frontiers in orthopedic implantology. This year’s panel focused on new directions in translational research.

The 39 poster presentations encouraged young researchers to exchange ideas, promote collaboration, and support their peers.

Talks were also given by:

  • Johnson V. John, assistant professor at the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation in California
  • Paulo Noronha Lisboa-Filho of the São Paulo State University in Brazil Center for Nanotechnology Research Steering Committee chair, deputy director of the school of sciences, and professor
  • Ashwin Narasimhan, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Biomedical Engineering visiting assistant professor,
  • Abhinav Bhushan of the Illinois Institute of Technology associate professor of biomedical engineering
  • Bin Duan, University of Nebraska Medical Center Division of Cardiovascular Medicine associate professor
  • Eben Alsberg, Richard and Loan Hill Chair and Distinguished Professor in the UIC Departments of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Pharmacology and Regenerative Medicine, and Orthopaedic Surgery

The event was also supported by the UIC Office of Vice-Chancellor of Research, College of Dentistry, Colgate, and Springer Nature.
