The 11th annual Institute of Biomaterials, Tribocorrosion, Nano, and Regenerative Medicine (IBTN) Research Symposium was held this spring at the UIC College of Dentistry. This year’s symposium had a theme of “What’s New and Exciting in Biomedical Research” and promoted opportunities for collaboration, ignition of ideas, and a supportive environment.

The symposium included students and researchers from throughout Chicago and the Midwest. The event also included lectures, panel discussions, poster presentations, and a keynote speech from Luisa A. DiPietro of UIC about comprehending the complex process in wound healing. On day two, a keynote speech was also given by Guillermo Ameer of Northwestern University on innovations in regenerative materials and medical devices for reconstructive surgeries.

The event hosted a remarkable panel discussion about tackling the current funding economy with hope, self-resilience, and a positive outlook on the research being conducted. Participants also were further informed about the recent aspects in various scientific realms, such as wound healing and regenerative medicine, advancing hemiarthroplasty techniques, microfluidics, and nanotherapeutics.

The 37 poster presentations encouraged young researchers to exchange ideas, promote collaboration, and support their peers.

Talks were also given by Markus Wimmer, professor and Grainger Director of the Rush Arthritis and Orthopedics Institute in Chicago and associate chairman for research in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center, Guigen Zhang, professor, Halcomb Endowed Chair, and department chair of the F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Kentucky, Sriram Ravindran, associate professor in the Department of Oral Biology at UIC’s College of Dentistry, Joyce Huanhuan Chen, assistant professor in Molecular Engineering and in The Ben May Department for Cancer Research at the University of Chicago, Peng Zhang, assistant professor of neurological surgery at Northwestern University, and Russell Pesavento, assistant professor in the Department of Oral Biology at UIC’s College of Dentistry.

The event was supported by the UIC Office of Vice-Chancellor of Research, College of Dentistry, and the UIC Richard and Loan Hill Department of Biomedical Engineering.
