Research by Tolou Shokuhfar and her colleagues was published in the high-impact journal Nanoscale.
This research reports, for the first time, real-time iron oxide nanoparticle biomineralization by magnetotactic bacteria, tiny organisms that synthesize magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in environments without oxygen, such as the deep sea.
Understanding biomineralization processes in living organisms such as these can help scientists to design biomimetic materials and can shed new light on topics such as evolution.
