The BiAffect app, developed by a research team led by Dr. Alex Leow of the Richard and Loan Hill Department of Bioengineering at UIC, has the potential to turn people’s smartphones into a tool to unobtrusively monitor their mental health.
The app—available now in Apple’s App Store—works in the background of users’ phones and tracks data such as typing speed and rhythm, mistakes in texts, and the relative frequency with which someone is using the phone.
It has attracted a significant amount of press coverage lately for the valuable signals it may provide to ensure that people are in a positive state of mental health and connect them with much-needed services if they are not—a factor that is especially important for people with depression, bipolar disorder, and other conditions.
