Avanaki named Honors College Capstone Supervisor of the Year

Kamran Avanaki

Richard and Loan Hill Department of Biomedical Engineering Professor Kamran Avanaki was selected as the UIC Honors College Capstone Supervisor of the Year.

This annual award is given to a faculty member for their outstanding mentorship of Honors College students’ Senior Honors Capstone projects. Winners are chosen based on nominations and votes from Honors College students.

In the nominations, one of Avanaki’s students noted that he shows exceptional and transformative care in their growth as students and researchers. Another said that he helps them think through scientific questions, handle setbacks, analyze results carefully, and communicate research clearly in his lab.

Avanaki said he is deeply honored to receive the prestigious Honors College Capstone Supervisor of the Year Award.

“Mentoring students is one of the most meaningful parts of my work, and it is incredibly rewarding to see them grow as independent researchers, develop confidence in their ideas, and contribute to projects with real clinical and scientific impact,” he said. “This recognition is especially meaningful because it comes from the students, whose curiosity, dedication, and growth continue to inspire me.”

Avanaki was recognized during the UIC Honors College convocation May 6.
