DESCRIPTION:This is an in-person event in room COMRB 8175 on west campus (directions).  You can also watch seminar live here&gt;&gt;    Speaker:    Xiaoyang Wu  Associate Professor  Ben May Department of Cancer Research  University of Chicago    Title:    Somatic stem cell and biomaterial engineering for skin disease and beyond    Abstract:      Somatic gene therapy provides a promising therapeutic approach for a variety of otherwise terminal or severely disabling diseases. We have developed a novel cutaneous gene transfer approach by combining genome editing technology with the skin epidermal system. In proof-of-concept studies, we have demonstrated that we can develop engineered skin epidermal stem cells to achieve stable and long term delivery of incretin hormone GLP1 in vivo, which can significantly reduce body weight and help maintain glucose homeostasis. Additionally, by engineering skin somatic stem cells, we demonstrated the tempting possibility that we can deliver a therapeutic protein, hBChE, which can effectively protect against cocaine-seeking and overdose in vivo. The clinical potential of cutaneous gene transfer is broad, and our research has established the essential groundwork and tools for this rapidly evolving field. | Event post: https://bme.uic.edu/events?page_id=8389
