Title: Surprising features of primary cilia and their relationship to diabetes

Abstract: Primary cilia have long been regarded as static organelles, passively receiving extracellular cues for signal transduction to the cell. Our recent work demonstrates active motility in pancreatic islet primary cilia, which contributes to beta cell insulin secretion. Cilia possess localized glycolytic machinery capable of local ATP generation, which we propose fuels dynein-mediated motility. These data challenge the long-held view of cilia as static structures and provides evidence for metabolic-mechanical coupling in ciliary function, with implications for metabolic disease and ciliopathies.
