Title: Advanced Diffusion-Weighted MRI for Comprehensive Characterization of Tissue Microstructures

Abstract: Biological tissues are complex due to the underlying cellular structures and their related functions. In vivo characterization of biological tissues, normal or cancerous, has been a focus of diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) for the past three decades. Conventional DWI techniques, however, cannot comprehensively characterize biological tissue which contains an array of underlying properties such as cellularity, vascularity, and heterogeneity. This seminar will highlight advanced DWI techniques our group has been developing; describe the theory, implementation, and validation of these novel techniques; and showcase their clinical applications in cancer detection, diagnosis, and treatment assessment. We will also discuss comprehensive approaches to expand the benefits of advanced DWI to many organs.
